Bird is the word.

The subject on The Daily Show yesterday was feral cats and the harm they cause to the bird world. They prowl around hunting native songbirds and other feathered friends, endangering the avian population. With more food in their bellies, cats can survive longer, reproducing to create more potential tweety killers. So there was a cat supporter and a bird supporter to show both sides of the story. The former thought cats needed to be encouraged in their environment and they were now a protected presence, while the birder said many should be killed, captured or kept in homes. Nick, my fiance and bird expert, hates when my cat visits my parents country home and is left outside to his own devices. In the eight years I’ve had my Elijah he has killed a couple birds and one rabbit, surprisingly, given he is declawed and weighs nearly twenty pounds. There is still a feline athlete under all that hair and lazy indoor-cat puff. And while I want to preserve my feathered friends and support the skies, I feel a surge of pride to know Elijah’s instinct to hunt is so innate that he can still bring home Peter cottontail if he really wanted to. I’m definitely a cat lady. And cats are definitely a big enemy of birds. At the end of the day, it’s about balance though and the two species need to be able to coexist. I wish I had more stats on this subject. I’m not going to do heavy research to post this blog. Kind of a random one.
