Listening activity:

Reflect on your listening skills by mentally replaying a conversation you had with someone today. What were they saying to you through their words or body language?

Were you receptive? Were you open or just thinking about how you wanted to respond or what you wanted to say next?

The art of listening is a delicate practice, but very important.

Listening speaks volumes.

Tips for being a better listener:

1. Take a deep breath and focus. (This helps you become more present and tune in with your conversation partner(s).)

2. Rephrase bits of the conversation to clarify the subject matter and to demonstrate active listening. The person knows you hear them when you are repeating back to them.

3. Ask questions.

4. Verbal pauses like “right” or “I see” show the person that you are hearing them.

5. Be aware of how much you talk or for how long you talk. Often when you pause or allow for silence, the other person will have something to say.

Secret key? Stop talking before the other person stops listening. Balance!

Got any listening tips or gripes? These are a few tips of my own. Here is a great article on how to improve your listening skills. REALLY liked this article and can relate to the example of the “absent friend” who is totally lost in dialogue.
