Understanding the creative urge.

“If you have the creative urge, it isn’t going to go away. But sometimes it takes a while before you accept the fact.” – Hugh Macleod

The spot in artists, writers, painters and the like that longs for that illuminating spark of insight or inspiration to fall down like rain… that’s the part that hits at the heart. Sometimes we wait for it. We think that we search for it, even if we are standing still. We may even fool ourselves that it will come to us with little help of our own. It’s when you seek that you will find. Search for your muse.

Pursue it as if it is the love of your life.

Romance your creative instinct into an ever-growing desire and as you are walking that road with your eyes open you are going to find flag posts and blazes in the trail that are guiding your way.

Whatever it is you are longing for is going to take a search and cultivation of sorts. A constant sowing and pulling of weeds.

“This works and this doesn’t.”

“I’ll keep this.”

“Bypassing this junk here.”

I had a few “likes” on yesterday’s blog and followed a link to a beautious blog post that celebrated Ray Bradbury, may he rest in peace.

“You must write every single day of your life… You must lurk in libraries and climb the stacks like ladders to sniff books like perfumes and wear books like hats upon your crazy heads… may you be in love every day for the next 20,000 days. And out of that love, remake a world.”

—Ray Bradbury

And this is what loving words is like. Digesting another’s writing or art is like whetting your appetite so you may concoct your own entree of verbal sorts. Because if you have the creative urge then it’s only your own meal, cooked by you, prepared by you, warmed and heated by that Godly spark of insight that will leave you truly fulfilled.
