Baby steps.

Replacement behaviors are behaviors you want to replace a target behavior.

Target Behavior: Smoking a cigarette after lunch.

Replacement Behavior: Having a cup of tea immediately after lunch, sucking on a piece of hard candy or taking a brief walk outside.

Celebrate your small successes daily!

Maybe not necessarily with champagne…

An effective replacement behavior will have the same or similar consequence of a target behavior. i.e.) Smoking a cigarette is calming, stress relieving and gets you away from people and into “you time.” Substitute a behavior that provides you a similar sensation or consequence as smoking.

I use smoking as a simple example.

Behavior change can be scary. Oh my. Simply changing can be scary!

Don’t be so hard on yourself.

You’re right, it’s so much easier to go the replacement route as opposed to just “quitting” something – then all of a sudden you’re left with this time or energy gap. Best to fill it up with something awesome!
